Oman is rich in cultural heritage and natural beauty. To experience the adventure’s and admire the wonders Oman has to offer, you might want to consider a desert trip.
When we think of the Arabian Desert, the first thing that comes to mind is a vast landscape covered in sand dunes. Another picture is traveling Bedouins in front of a line of Camels while making their journey to their next camping destination. Well, both pictures are true and its one that you can and will experience in Wahiba Sands.
Wahiba Sands is a cosmic heap of rolling red and white sand dunes rising up to 200 meters that extends across the east side as far as the eye can see. It hosts great range of plant life and animal species that call the ever-changing sand rhythm ‘home’ and one that photographer’s would find it a pleasurable playground for spectacular pictures. Its character changes as you head to the south, you will find El Hikman, a land scattered with salt flats and it’s the residence of migrating birds. The desert is also the home to about 3,000 Bedouins.
The wahiba sand is around four hours drive from Muscat, and it is equipped with fully operational camps for over-night stays, that gives you the chance to experience the desert to its fullest.
The drive to the Al Reesh Desert Camp- Wahiba Sand (Camp side) is where the experience and adventure go hand in hand. Along the journey, you can’t help but notice the beautiful horizon ahead and the terrain changing beside you along the way.
To give you an ides of the camp sight; you will come to see that the camp is fenced-in as well as appropriately guarded. The tents are made of palm fronds and net paneled windows, and equipped to meet your comfort needs. The entertainment area, which is also used for enjoying meals and for lounging, is laid-out in the traditional Omani style.
As far as the activities go, you will have the chance to experience an exhilarating ‘dune bashing’ on 4WD, the adventure of sand skiing and a most traditional activities ‘camel riding’. You will also get the opportunity for admiration moments of your surrounding by visiting a Bedouin home and see them in their natural habitat. As the day is built with activities, the night on the other hand is peaceful. Evening events evolve around a gathering at the campfire to indulge in the entertainment of a troupe of Bedouin musicians, dancers and singers. A night-drive is also included to explore the desert’s night beauty under the densely-starred sky.
There is one more thing you can not leave without experiencing and that is the sun set and rise. I would definitely recommend an early rise at dawn, even if you’re not an early bird person. Watching the yellow sun rise shooting red beam across the land is a sun rise like you have never seen and an experience you would not want to miss.
If you’re feeling exploratory you may decide to go independently, if not, there are tour companies that are more than happy to arrange it for you
